Instant Messaging (Thing 11)

Our public access computers has Yahoo Messenger installed and for the patrons, IM'ing in the library is very convenient, but not so much for the staff, in my opinion. Why? With so many distractions at the public services desks, the best way for us to communicate in an instant is the old fashioned way, via telephone. Personally, I only use instant messaging as a way to communicate with a service or company's tech support staff. I do think that it's cool however that you can set up your MSN messenger, Yahoo Messenger, or your AOL messenger of the old, to allow your cell phone to receive any sudden IM's. Instant messaging is a great tool for those librarians and libraries that are able to provide instant, virtual reference. BTW, I chose to use the web-based version of Yahoo Messenger. My IM username is kwarin1.
