Tagging (Thing 13)

I've been using tagging in my Delicious, Flickr and Vimeo accounts for quite some time and I find it to be extremely useful. Tagging is a great feature to have especially when your personal collections began to grow to the point that you start forgetting what's in each collection. In my opinion, tagging most definitely belongs in the library as part of the library's OPAC. Due to the lack of authority control, it should not replace standardized subject headings. However, complementing the OPAC ith tagging would make it more user friendly for our patrons and perhaps even some librarians. Authority controlled subject headings are necessary to organize a collection, but they serve, in my opinion, no further use if a patron cannot find an item in the collection that so much work went into organizing. Tagging is a practice that should definitely be encouraged.
